Encouraging creativity, play, imagination, self-esteem, insight and growth
Play and Dramatherapy for Children 4–12 years:
Play and Dramatherapy is a unique form of therapy in which creativity, play, improvisation, movement, voice, storytelling, dramatisation and arts have a central position within the therapeutic relationship.
Play and Dramatherapy uses materials to help stimulate dramatic play; dolls, puppets, masks, dress up, art materials, and musical instruments. These techniques help the therapist to assess how a child experiences their world and how they communicate and react to the events and people in their worlds. For example, a child who finds it difficult to talk to adults may find it easier to talk to a puppet held by the therapist. The therapist follows the child’s lead in play and in return guides the child to make positive changes.
How can Play and Dramatherapy help a child:
- Expanding self-expression
- Increasing knowledge of self
- Transferring ideas into real life
- Problem-solving
- Relieving stress
- Expanding emotional literacy
- Making connections with other people
My child does not have a diagnosis, can they still receive therapy?
I do not require my clients to have a diagnosis. I often work with children who are waiting for a diagnosis or have not received a formal diagnosis. Your child is welcome with or without a diagnosis.

“In play, the child becomes master rather than subject. Play allows the child to transcend passivity and to become the active doer of what happens around them”
